Coconut Cake [Dec. 27th, 2009|10:24 pm]

[Tags|, , ]

I set myself to the task of recreating my Grandmother's coconut cake this holiday. It was something my entire family looked forward to, but with her death the recipe was lost (we thought). After Thanksgiving I tried one recipe, but it wasn't quite right. I was getting set to try another when my Mom told me she had found a recipe card with my Grandmother's recipe. She sent it to me and I made it last Friday. It was like bringing a Christmas memory to life.

It's not exactly a traditional Southern recipe, since the frosting isn't a true seven minute frosting, but it's still damn yummeh. And it has absolutely no regard for health. It takes 17 eggs to make this cake.

I was hoping somebody out there had some delicious recipes that call for a ton of honey. My in-laws gave us a wonderful basket full of goodies, but the only item I wasn't sure what to do with was the gallon jug of honey!

Savory or sweet, does anyone have anything that uses honey as a main ingredient? I drink tea, but not that often. It's going to take me years to use it all up! :) Thanks in advance!

Escapings. [Dec. 27th, 2009|07:35 pm]

[lulzinternet]
[mood | amused]

My hamster probably escaped 4 times now total. 3 times from his cage and somehow once.. (which just happened) from this ball. I'm guessing I didn't put the cap on well enough. Anyways every time he escapes he ends up in the same spot. Around a pile of clothes inside my closet. My closet is long and goes to two rooms and one side of it doesn't have a door latched so he gets in there. I can easily lure him out with food but when I try to grab him he squeeks and goes nuts >_>; I fixed the cage situation so no worries there for future escapes!

So I was wondering if your hammy does the same XD Escapes then goes to the same spot every time.

Cashew was taken to the emergency vet on Boxing day; he was making a horrible screaming noise and was unable to pee. I'll spare you the details, but the result found in an x-ray was that there was a stone lodged in his urethra, he also had stones in the bladder itself. The decision was made to remove the stones while he was under anaesthetic, the most difficult part of which involved removing the stone from the penis itself which was done through a small incision made in the side of his manly bits. Through this hole the vet was then able to flush the bladder and bring the rest of the stones out through the same hole.

About 3-4 months ago, Cashew was unwell and anaesthetised, his recovery from this anasthetic (for an x-ray) was slow and I spent a lot of time worrying about him. I informed the vet that he had a problem coming around from the anasthetic but we had to anesthatise him to remove the trapped stone.

This morning, he wasn't recovering well and as the day progressed he began to struggle to breathe. I went to visit him at 4pm because I was afraid that he was giving up because he was in unfamiliar surroundings and had nothing familiar to stimulate him and only unfamiliar things to stress him out. He was limp and his sides were heaving as he tried to breathe. His heat pad had been removed because he was letting himself cook on it, and he'd previously received oxygen therapy to help his breathing. He had also had a pain killer that would make him feel dopey which could have contributed to him just wanting to lie around.

It was horrible to see him so lifeless.

At my last check-in with the vet at 7pm they said that he isn't struggling to breathe as much. I'm not sure if he'll keep this up and continue to improve or if he'll crash. I have been an emotional wreck all day and cried over Mimic and Foster when cleaning them out and handling them. I'm trying to do something productive with my waiting but I keep circling in and out of Cashew's medical thread on GL hoping someone will come up with a miracle cure or checking my e-mail hoping to find something that will make everything better there.

Please, please, please think of Cashew. He's been fighting for over three weeks and what was supposed to be a Christmas with the piggies turned into an emergency disaster :(

Also: Apologies, to those doing the Card Exchange. The delivery of your cards will be delayed, but I'm going to try and have them safely with you in January.

Edited to Add: Cashew went into kidney failure and was put to sleep.

USC Gamecocks cake [Dec. 27th, 2009|02:15 pm]

[mood |happy]

It's my boyfriends 21st birthday tomorrow and I really wanted to do something special for him. He's OBSESSED with the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. He has USC shirts, hats, belts,  shoes (crocs, actually), even a golf bag. If it has the USC logo on it, he owns it.  So I really wanted to involve USC in with his cake. I searched online a bit and found the cute little cartoon Cocky and knew that I had to make a buttercream transfer. I was most proud of this. Especially that I changed his hands around so he was holding up a 2 & a 1 :D
It was a fairly easy process, aside from covering the 2 in fondant. I had a really hard time getting the fondant in that area up near the top--but I think was able to make it look semi-decent.
The 2 is vanilla cake (Magnolia)
The 1 and the sign are chocolate cake (pioneer woman)
both were filled with vanilla bean swiss meringue buttercream (HTEAC)

Just to introduce myself:  - hello.
I am now the proud owner of the most lovely Russian Dwarf hamster, Pan. - and would love some hamster-lover friends.
I do have a question, though.:
Other 'normal-type' hamsters 'pouch' their food in cheek-pockets' don't they.  My little Russian Pan doesn't seem to do this.  He seems to bury his favorite foods in his sawdust to maybe come back for later?  I just wondered if this is my imagination or if anyone knows if this can be a habit.

Hi everyone,
Our sweet corgi, Corky, passed away this summer. She had back surgery to remove bone chips from her spinal cord, but we believe she had degenerative myelopathy as her back legs became paralyzed anyway. It was heartbreaking for us to lose her but we know she is happy now, frolicking with both of her legs in heaven. We just added a new member to our family, a beautiful tri-color pembroke named Annabelle! She is the sweetest, most gentle girl.

Hi all!
I'm so glad I found this community :)

Well anyways, I plan on redecorating my room to look more antique-ey,goth/victorian :)

I would like to stick with blacks off whites and teals/turqouise colors, BUT I cannot paint my walls due to me living in an apartment.

I can put shelving up though :)

So any good ideas or refrences you can show me? And good places to go to get little nick naks? (Besides the local antique store ;p)

I will be going to a local craft/fabric store called hobby lobby as the have amazing fabric there for curtains :)

Any help would be appreciated!

P.S.-if this is too long, lemme know and I'll attempt to make a cut :)

This is probably a stupid question, but I have two guinea pigs, and when I separate them for even a minute, my smaller one starts kinda SHRIEKING like he's scared his friend is gone forever. Hay guise. I recently discovered some really awesome eco friendly water bottles and wanted to share this with you. (You know your life is lame when the most excited you've been in weeks is over new water bottles for the guinea pigs)

This water bottle from Lixit is awesome. It's glass, which is probably much better for the piggies (ever notice how water tastes better out of glass glasses than plastic ones?). It also has a spring hanger which I needed to wrap around extra to keep it snug, and a little floating turtle to monitor the water levels. Woo!

I also received some lovely cards this year and due to a personal crisis didn't have time to send mine out, so I decided instead to post the pictures that would have been on the card.

[mood | depressed]

I keep forgetting Nancys gone. Everytime I walk into my room I go over to her cage, which I havent had the heart to put away yet. Then I look inside of it and remember... Then I start to cry again ):

She was with me for so long. I got her the summer before 6th grade, and now I'm nearing the end of 8th grade. She was always so nice to me, I never had a single problem with her biting me at all until recently. When ever I had a bad day, I would talk to her and tell her what happened, and just her little face staring at me made me feel better.

I know I still have Dewey, but he just isnt the same. Dont get me wrong, I love my little Dewey baby to death, but nothing can replace the spot in my heart I had for Nancy. She was my first hamster! I learned so much from her that has helped me raise Dewey. What majes Dewey different is that he is still scared. He allows me and only me to hold him now, but not for too long or he gets restless.

I'm thinking about getting another Dwarf. Not now, but in a few months perhaps.

R.I.P Nancy.

Advice sought:: a friend for a long-time solitary pig? [Dec. 27th, 2009|02:03 pm]

guinea_pigs

[cantralian]
Hi all,

I'm new to this community, and I come seeking some advice. I acquired a piggy on Monday, and he's one I've been trying to get for a year now (I had him last Christmas for two weeks, which is the last time his claws were trimmed. I didn't want to give him back, but they insisted). The previous owner did not look after him properly, kept him in a small Duna (30 x 50 x 30) on the floor, with no house and no interaction apart from cats jumping on top of his Duna and a big dog sniffing at it. His claws were so long they were curled repeatedly and two so soft they squished when I started the (long, slow) process of trimming them back.

Anyway, he's mine now, and he has a big cage and a house and a hay rack and proper food, and he's been to the vet (who says he is too fat and his muscles practically non-existent). The advice I'm looking for is whether he will be able to tolerate a friend?

He is approx 3-4, has been living like this for his whole life, and is an intact boar. Last Christmas I spent lots of time with him out and on my lap, and he became very chilled out and mellow after a few days of that, which I think bodes well for him being able to bond with a piggy friend. Here are some photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/29535208@N03/sets/72157612042139867/ (His old name was odd, and he didn't seem to know it, so I've renamed him That'll Do, Pig, or Pig/Babe/Giggly Piggly for short. He seems to be acquiring nicknames at an alarming rate!)

I don't want him to be alone, and I don't want to do the wrong thing by him, but I also don't want to do the wrong thing by a new piggie. I have very little experience with piggies, so I definitely need experienced input into the friend question. Help?

Intro.. newbie [Dec. 26th, 2009|07:41 pm]

hamsters

[happinesstrail]
I'm new to the community but certainly not new to hamsters. The hamster I have now is my third, but the first to not be a brown & white Syrian. I'm not sure what he is exactly since he was sold as a short-haired Syrian, but looks nearly long-haired to me. He is 5 months old and is very tame now, although he was so scared and mean at first. This is Diablo, enjoying his Christmas feast:

This is my hamster Bebe, who died in 2007. She was very unique and full of personality, even making hamster haters love her!

We also have a house rabbit, who is my mother's pride & joy.  I recently graduated college and brought my hamster home, and so far the rabbit hates him and tried to punch him from outside the running ball. It's going to be interesting...

Anyway, thanks in advance for letting me be a part of your community-- hope I have some input for you guys and your hamster adventures!

four boars who used to live together happily [Dec. 26th, 2009|04:45 pm]

guinea_pigs

[spacefem]
Billy Dee is on antibiotics and had a nasty leg injury on Tuesday, so we took him with us when we traveled for Christmas. We were gone three nights. His health improved considerably. Still sounds funny, but he's not wheezing, and he's putting a little weight on his leg now and then.

Today we got back and as a "welcome back!" present his roommates (especially Jabba) decided to hump the crap out of him and try to eat his ears. His leg is much better but he's still hobbling around and frankly I just don't think they're being nice. So we took all four out for floor time, sort of like an introduction except I can't believe that after only three days Billy's a whole new pig to them. The violence continued. We cleaned the pen and put Billy in there alone to rest.

Something about these events triggered Jabba and he's being a first class piggy a-hole! He's chattering like crazy and has just gotta hump SOMEBODY and the other two aren't appreciating it and Billy (who's still alone) probably can't take it. Jabba's like three years old and too old for this craziness! They usually get along so well. Right now I'm just letting him attack the other two so maybe he'll get rid of some energy and not take his aggression out on Billy but I'd love more advice if you've got it. I've heard that with boars you just need a "no blood no foul" mentality, let them do their thing, but it's a bit crazy in here today.

So, anyone remember my question about Felony and the Red Paws? Decided to go the natural route first and see how things pan out. We bought both epson salt and green tea and decided to go with the salt angle first.

After giving her a fish oil tablet wrapped in cheese, we set a towel down, filled a shallow pan and called her over. Armed with tiny slices of cheese we picked up her front end and dipped her feet in. She struggled so we held a bit more firmly. She was incredibly tense and shivering. We offered cheese and tried to sound relaxed, but she wouldn't take any. I began massaging her back while we sat calmly with her and tried the cheese again. She nibbled at it, but was still shaking.

After a couple of minutes, we took her feet out and washed them off with regular water, using cheese to keep her in place while we pat dried her paws off. She didn't turn tail or run and hide once we let her go, so we're assuming that's a good sign. She took food eagerly and did tricks of her own volition in order to get more cheese. I think the most surprising thing was that she stayed with us on the towel while we messed with her feet. After all the cheese was gone we gave the release word and she pranced off, following Dad as he went to empty the pan and put away the towel.

I'm no professional when it comes to dogs and my only teachers are books and Cesar Milan, so if there is an easier way to go about this, or tips and tricks I can try, I would love to hear them.

These cookies (someone else posted the recipe, so I won't duplicate it) were a new recipe for me this year, and they got raves from everybody that tried them! Hello! I've posted comments, but haven't posted anything to introduce myself until now. I did make some improvised pumpkin bread pudding for thanksgiving, but it didn't look good (tasted fine though, as most bread puddings do). But today being Christmas with the bigger holiday meal at dinner, I had the oven and lunch.

This is an easy fix for when you want a holiday goody without pulling out the mixer:

I am a lazy cook. Hello *wavie* But a good oven should be used.

[music |"Far Away Christmas Blues"- Little Esther & Johnny Otis]

As a last minute time-killer and something to add for desert for today's Christmas get-together with family I whipped up this recipe the night before. I got this recipe from an old copy of the 2007 "100 Best Cookies" issue of Better Homes and Gardens.

I thought this recipe was simple (and delicious!)and didn't call for too many fancy ingredients. I just had to buy the chocolate.

Ok, so it looks more like a Valentine's treat with the leftover heart sprinkles I decided to throw on there. But still cute nonetheless.
